MCP, skills and memory. How they fit into a useful AI agent

MCP, skills and memory. How they fit into a useful AI agent

The role of each layer and a practical way to test tool-using agents without confusing access, instructions and knowledge.

Three layers with different jobs

Memory retains context and sources. A skill documents a procedure. MCP is a standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. The model coordinates those pieces within available capabilities and permissions.

Adding a connection does not solve a knowledge problem. Writing instructions does not grant tool access. Keeping these responsibilities separate makes a system easier to maintain and evaluate.

A connection does not verify an outcome

An MCP server can expose database or service tools. The AI client uses that interface, but a connection alone does not ensure correct tool use or a successful operation.

Define inputs, permissions and a verification step. Reading a contact differs from modifying it. Important writes need a final read and duplicate detection if a request is repeated.

Skills document how to finish a task

I use skills for sequences with a clear completion criterion, such as checking sources, preparing a proposal, verifying it and recording the outcome. Credentials and the full knowledge base belong elsewhere.

Instruction loading depends on the environment. The portable principle is to separate procedure from model, identify required tools and specify the evidence needed to finish.

Memory supplies context and provenance

Calendar access does not explain why a meeting was agreed. That context belongs in memory. Superbrain uses indexes and notes to retain decisions, dates and sources.

JARVIS adds voice interaction. Life RPG combines conversation, structured Notion memory and MCP tools. These are personal architecture projects, not claims that an identical workflow has been deployed for every business.

Evaluate a narrow pilot

Start with finding a project and proposing an update without applying it. Check the selected record, conflicting evidence and missing fields. Test writes in a controlled environment afterwards.

Include missing records, denied permissions, ambiguous data and repeated requests. If a fixed rule and a conventional integration solve the task, use that simpler workflow. Add an agent when interpreting context is a real requirement, and document permissions, checks and maintenance.
